whenever you think like ,i want to do some validation and verfication before any DML opertion. You should use before triggers.

Before triggers are used to perform a task before a record is inserted or updated or deleted.

We use before trigger when we want to update the database after the changes are done in that record.

It depends upon what kind of before trigger you want to use.
in case of before insert if you mainly want to do any validation etc.
in case of before update if you want to update any field of the same object.
in case of before delete if you want to check any links. -
When you want to perform an action before saving into database.
